Denver Technology and the Cash Register Building
The Denver technology scene is booming from the ground up! Many downtown skylines have iconic buildings such as the Empire State Building in New York, the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower in Chicago but few are as unique as Denver’s Cash Register Building, more formally known as Wells Fargo Center. If you appreciate the Denver technology scene, architecture, and digital art, this is the building for you!
The 52-story, 700-foot tall skyscraper was originally built in 1956, showcasing a red granite and glass facade. It offers residents and visitors alike stunning views of downtown Denver and the Front Range. Recently, the iconic structure underwent cutting-edge upgrades, including a fitness center and a redesigned lobby, but digital media took pride-of-place in the year-long renovations. Digital artwork is now displayed on five separate, monolithic LED columns that show, among other things:
- Waterfalls whose spray is synced to current local wind patterns;
- Algorithmically generated flocks of birds;
- Groves of trees with leaves that reflect the season; and
- Photographs that local photographers can upload to the building’s Instagram site.
The tower also houses an impressive permanent collection, anchored by New York–based artist Enoc Perez, whose work has been featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
