Why IT Support Makes (Or Breaks) A Great Place to Work

Today’s business managers and owners are constantly challenged with finding ways to retain their talented staff. There are enormous resources (time and money) invested in sourcing, screening, hiring, training, compensating, and motivating employees. It can be sickening when a key hire decides to leave; however, employers can avoid this scenario. This rarely means promising employees certain benefits or opportunities for personal and professional growth. It’s about creating an environment that employees enjoy working in every day. Great workplaces typically focus on building systems that support employees. Here’s why having the right IT support can make (or break) your ability to retain a happy, productive workforce.

IT Support for Teams

Technology glitches happen but they shouldn’t be a normal office occurrence. The best IT support providers don’t focus on reacting to technology glitches; rather, they seek to prevent technology issues from arising in the first place. Traditional IT support can be slow, cumbersome, and difficult for employees to navigate; however, a “smart” service desk allows users to interact with it, proactively search for solutions, and read about new application features. An IT support and service provider should have the ability to (a) prevent technology issues before they occur and (b) greatly empower employees to quickly and easily find solutions to problems when they do occur.

IT Support for Managers and Owners

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, right? It’s important that employees have access to the tools they need to be efficient and productive. Tools that automate common processes, for instance, create efficiency for the company and increase an employees desire to remain working for an organization. For example, online invoicing and billing apps are excellent tools that can be used to streamline inventory processes, boost team productivity, and increase job satisfaction. And, project management software can reduce the number of meetings, enable collaboration, and keep everyone aligned with company objectives. Providing employees with the proper technology and best IT support is the first step to creating a happy, fulfilling, great place to work. It’s also the first step to increasing productivity and efficiency that goes straight to your bottom line.

Start by Gathering Employee Feedback

The best way to determine if technology and IT support needs are being met is to … ask employees if they’re happy! It seems so simple but it’s true. Simply, begin a dialogue in your next staff meeting or institute a workplace satisfaction survey. It’s important to get to the heart of what your employees need to do their jobs well and be happy while they do it. Consider questions such as:

  • How would you currently rate your technology skills (scale of 0-10)?
  • Which training topics would you like to see offered to further develop job-skills?
  • If you could fix one technology related issue within the organization, what would it be?
  • How would you rate overall team productivity based on existing technology used to perform daily activities (scale of 0-10)?
  • If you could replace one piece of technology or software (to make everyone’s life easier), what would it be?

The primary objective is to demonstrate a commitment to providing the tools and support needed to successfully and happily perform daily activities. Refer to this survey as an example to start with and build upon but make it about them. Ask pointed questions about the technology they use, whether they think it helps them do their job better, and whether or not a different application or device might be more effective. After all, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!
